Dad, Let's go fishing.

It's time to take a break from life's schedule. Especially when your six year old says, "Dad, let's go fishing." So you pack the gear, some snacks and drinks, fire up the car and drive to your favorite fishing hole.

Once there, you unpack the gear, rig some rods for action and get ready to settle down for a while by the side of a nice pond when the child says, "I gotta go."

HUH? Why didn't we take care of that before we left? If you're lucky, he can take care of business on the side of the path, just zip and Hello, Yellow Stream! If not, then it's time to head back home, luckily not too far away.
Instead of repacking all the gear and rods, I usually leave them for the short trip back home. It's a safe area and I have never had anything stolen while away. (so far)

OKAY! That's taken care of, now back to fooling a fish. Once settled in and rods in the water, your son says, after ten minutes, "I'm bored." This is when you engage him in the outdoors, pointing out birds in the sky, seeing if he knows what kind they are, talking about plants and why they grow from their tips, looking for beetles under a log. This fishing trip has turned out to not be about catching fish and more about spending time with your youngest. Not a bad return on your time.

When a fish does hit, he gets to reel it in, no matter who's rod the fish is on. He loves it and I love watching him. It's a very exciting time watching your son pull in the world's smallest bluegill.

Let's go fishing!
