9/11 memorial prologue

The weekend before 9/11, my wife and I stayed at a nice little country log cabin called "The Log Mansion" up in Pennsylvania. We had an extended weekend and enjoyed ourselves driving around the countryside in perfect weather. We expecially liked a small lake in the area called Indian Lake. As we drove around and looked at the houses in the area, maybe buying one for a vacation home, we noticed almost all the street addresses had 9's and 11's in them. It got to the point where we asked ourselves out loud," What is happening around here? Why are we seeing all those 9's and 11's? We didn't put anything on the coincidence and certainly didn't connect the numbers with the upcoming date. We came home to Maryland and the next day, I went in to work in Washington D.C., thankful for the three day weekend and the relaxing time we had. All hell broke loose that day, as rumors flew around, "The State Dept has been hit!, the Lincoln Memorial has been hit!, the Pentagon has been hit!" We knew another plane was in the air, coming to Washington, most likely to hit the Capitol building.
Now we know about those brave souls on flight 93, trying to take the plane back from the terrorists and ending up crashing in a field right near Indian Lake. Now those numbers we saw all weekend make sense. It is a chilling thought, we saw and did not understand what was shown us until it was all too late.
May all Americans never be subjected to another day like 9/11/2001. May all Americans remember this day and also remember that our enemy is still alive and looking for other ways to hurt and kill us.

May the people on flight 93 rest in peace in Pennsylvania.

9/11 memorial

Five years ago, my wife and I were on the phone with each other when the World Trade buildings crashed to the ground. We were horrified by the events and we already knew we were in a war with Osama Bin Laden and his Al Qaeda crew. What we didn't know yet was how close we were living to some of the hijackers.

When the pictures of the hijackers started making their way onto the news programs, we both said to each other when the picture of Mohammed Atta was shown, "He looks very familiar, we know him." We tried to remember where we had seen him and finally realized it was at the local gas station in Laurel, MD. We couldn't remember if he worked there or if we had just seen him at the station, but we knew he was familiar. We recalled how surly he was, never friendly to anyone, always with a scowl on his face and never waving hi or acknowledging our presence. Too late, we now knew why he had acted this way to the Americans around him.

I hate that man and always will. How dare he invade our way of life, taking what we offered and repaying us with his acts of war. Time and again, I wish out loud, "I wish I had run him over while he lived near us." Maybe if he had died before he could pull off his criminal act, we would have uncovered the other plotters, maybe the whole operation would have been postponed or called off. Who knows? The truth is that he managed to successfully destroy about three thousand lives and three thousand families.

In remembrance of the families of the victims of 9/11, my wife and I offer this prayer, "May the Lord God watch over you and guide you. May no other horror visit itself on your lives and hurt your families. We pray that God gives you the strength to continue to love Him and America. God bless you and God bless America."
